چکیده
IN“ANOPENLETTERTOCANCERRESEARCHERS” (Letters, 21 Oct., p. 439), S. J. Elledge and G. J. Hannon questioned the wisdom of asking the NIH to undertake the Human Cancer Genome Project (HCGP) (1) recently proposed by a National Cancer Institute Working Group, of which we were members. Elledge and Hannon object to the HCGP on the grounds that the project is unlikely to achieve its goals, that the expenditures would decrease funding available for investigator-initiated projects, and that the funds could be better used to support other work, such as genetic screens for factors required for the growth and survival of cancer cells. Although we welcome debate about the Working Group’s proposal and do not dispute the value of genetic screens, the Letter misrepresents the HCGP. First, it undervalues the goal of the project, which is to provide as thorough an account as currently possible, now that the human genome has

I-49: Human Y Chromosome ProteomeProject
The success of the Human Genome Project (HGP) has provided a blueprint for the approximately 20,000 gene-encoded proteins potentially active in all of the hundreds of cell types that make up the human body. Yet we still have limited knowledge about a majority of the gene-encoded proteins which are the “building blocks of life” and “cellular machinery”. It is estimated that for nearly half of th...
متن کاملMolecular epidemiology of Human Papillomaviruses in breast cancer, Golestan province of Iran
Abstract Background and objectives: Breast cancer is the most prevalent one in women. Some of the common causative factors are genetic background, nutritional and environmental factors. Viruses are believed as a risk factor in this cancer, too. Recent studies reported that Human Papillomaviruses can be one of the possible risk factors of breast cancer. This study focused on investigation of the...
متن کاملDemonstration of Herpes Simplex Virus, Cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr Virus in Colorectal Cancer
Background: The present study sought to investigate molecular evidence for association between the presence of herpes simplex virus (HSV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in CRC and colorectal polyp by using the PCR method in Iran. Methods: In this analytical case-control study, we selected 15 patients with CRC, 20 patients with colorectal polyp, and 35 patients without mali...
متن کاملI-40: Male Genome Programming, Infertility and Cancer
Background: During male germ cells differentiation, genomewide re-organizations and highly specific programming of the male genome occur. These changes not only include the large-scale meiotic shuffling of genes, taking place in spermatocytes, but also a complete “re-packaging” of the male genome in post meiotic cells, leading to a highly compacted nucleo-protamine structure in the mature sperm...
متن کاملMolecular Identification of Human Papiloma Virus (HPV) in Cervical Neoplasia and the Risk Factors Affecting Cervical Cancer in Isfahan
The rate of cervical cancer in Asians is deferent, based on the risk factors affecting and the rate of papiloma virus infection among females. Cervical cancer is one of the important cancers between Iranian women. In the present study the rate of cervical neoplasia was detected in Isfahan and some risk factors affecting the incidence of cervical cancer was analyzed. The human papiloma virus inf...
